The mechanics of website construction, in most instances, are not difficult. When a design firm begins touting its technical expertise, and the air thickens with acronyms, you can bet you're about to be pitched a project all out of proportion to what you really need, and almost certainly beyond what you were expecting to spend.  We can do the razzamatazz--feel the air thickening?--like DHTML, Flash, CSS, Javascript, XML---just like everyone else.  For designers, it's fun to do and we get to showcase our stuff, but all too often it has nothing to do with what you need.  In fact, we're pretty good at talking you OUT of spending money on a new or revamped website at all (see Myth #1: Everyone Must Have a Website.)  What is difficult, and what we think we do pretty well, is judgment: the experience and understanding to balance the dictates of function and form, budget, aesthetics, and technical expertise. The technologies that power dynamic and complex websites can provide designers and clients with appropriate and very useful tools---the trick is knowing when and how to apply them.
