Webpage Publishing
So, you want to create a website of your own? Not quite sure where
to begin? Consider the old saying, "An expert is someone who has
read the manual." In other words, plan on spending some time reading.
I can help you with specific questions, relating to problems you are encountering,
but unless you want to hire me at outrageous prices as a private tutor,
I don't have enough time to help you with the request, "Teach me how to
make web pages." Find a friend who can break you in to the basics,
or, even better, teach yourself.
In brief, what do you need?
1) Some idea about HTML (see the tutorials below)
2) An HTML editor. So far as I can see, the easiest way
to go for beginners is to download Netscape
Communicator, a combination web browser/editor/publisher. Once
you're running this program, writing your HTML document starts with clicking
"New Document" in the "File" pull-down menu . . .
3) A place for your site to call home. Your webpage "home"
will be a directory at the server at your internet provider (in Claremont,
this is probably CyberPort.)
Call (or e-email) them, and they'll set you up with what you need to publish
with them.
If you look at the bar at the top of your screen, you'll see: "webpage2.htm"
The first part of this address (or "URL") is the standard beginning for
all World Wide Web addresses. The address for my internet provider
follows, as "valley.net" The directory which they gave me to house
my site is called, "~MrDz" and the specific file for the page you are reading
now is called, "webpage2" and finally the address ends with "htm" or "html"
which is a way to let the computer elves know to look for a document in
HTML language.
Some of the sites which I have found useful in learning this stuff are:
